Our beloved Chennai – We mourn!

Posted below is the email received from the President of the Alumni Association of the  Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, of which I am a member.

As you already know, our beloved Chennai has been hit by devastating and unprecedented floods with continuous rains for almost a month. The damage caused and the suffering has been truly of epic proportions and reports are still trickling in of rescue operations in parts of the city which appear to be isolated from other parts of the city.
While a substantial amount  of service and aid are pouring in for emergency relief , lot more needs  to be done and efforts are required on a long term basis for rehabilitation and well being of the victims in flood affected areas. We are aware that many of our alumni and their families are involved in various ways in diverse projects to help the flood victims and IITMAA would like to supplement their efforts by setting up the “IITMAA Flood Rehabilitation and Health Care Fund”.

We have already received commitment from a few alumni to contribute over a lakh of rupees to this fund and we appeal to our alumni community to contribute from their heart to this noble initiative. To ensure that fund collection, maintenance and deployment are done in the most professional and transparent manner, we have decided to route these funds through the IITM Alumni Charitable Trust (IITMACT) and a separate bucket under “IITMAA Flood Rehabilitation and Health Care Fund” will be maintained by IITMACT. Contributions to the fund are eligible for tax deduction under section 80G.  The bank details for transfer of such contributions are given below:
